Rhododendron Azalea Bonsai Trees
The above Azalea bonsai tree comes from the Kobayashi Nursery in Japan where they specialize in Azalea Bonsai. This is a great example of the skill the Japanese bring to the art of bonsai. This tree has been placed in a conservative high quality un-glazed pot so that attention is not taken away from the tree.
Azalea bonsai trees are very popular because of the small leaves which give a good scale to the tree. The flower display on Azalea trees is stunning and another reason why these are popular trees.
Position your Azalea in partial shade and protect from frost. When the tree is in flower it is a good idea to protect from heavy rainfall. Azalea bonsai trees do not like to be kept dry and should be watered every day during the growing season. It is always best to water them with collected rainwater.
You can feed them every few weeks during the growing season however the exact feeding regime will depend on what you are trying to accomplish with your tree. If you have a tree under development then you will be looking for good strong growth, and can feed every couple of weeks during the growing season. If you are looking after a 'Finished Tree' then you do not want strong growth and feeding should be minimized more than with a developing tree. This area of bonsai is always up for debate. You will want to use a special ericaceous fertilizer when feeding.
In summer when the flowers start to come out you will notice that most of the trees leaves are covered by flowers. You will want to remove the flowers when they start to wilt.
