Chinese Elm Bonsai Tree
Today we have a short video of an imported Chinese Elm ( Ulmus Parvifolia) Bonsai Tree. Chinese Elm bonsai trees are very popular and possibly the most popular type of bonsai tree in the world. The leaves are very small which helps with the scale of the tree and one of the many reasons this tree is so popular. The Elm is described as a deciduous tree meaning that the leaves should fall off in autumn, however this is not always the case and in some climates the leaves will not drop off at all.
Another reason for the Elm's popularity is that they can be styled into any bonsai shape required, and the long flexible roots allow these trees to be grown over rocks.
An Elm bonsai tree can be placed in full sun, and make sure to protect the roots from frost. They can be watered daily during the growing season, and we will often water our trees twice per day on very hot days. We feed our trees including this one every 2 to 3 weeks and feed them Biogold block feed as well as Seaweed liquid fertilizer.
Compared to a lot of other bonsai trees, the Elm is relatively inexpensive and can be trained to live indoors. You will often see these trees sold as indoor trees, however they will always be happiest living outdoors when possible. If you do decide to keep your Elm indoors then make sure it is placed in a light position out of the full midday sun and away from radiators. Keep on top of watering and mist the leaves every day. Use rainwater when possible. If you are misting with tap water you may find over time that the leaves start to show a white residue being left on them. A simple trick to bring leaves back to their full vibrant colors is to use a product called 'Leaf Shine. Leaf shine can also be used on pots to make them look cleaner and sharper, and this is something we often use on our Unglazed pots.
Elms can grow up to 20 meters and are considered a hardy tree. What is nice about the Elm is that it tolerates well to being trimmed all year round.
We hope you enjoy the video and thanks for visiting
Kind regards
